'Africa my Africa' by David Diop #WorldPoetryDay

David_Diop

A beautiful Poem on 'Africa'

Africa, my Africa
Africa of proud warriors in ancestral savannahs
Africa of whom my grandmother sings
On the banks of the distant river
I have never known you
But your blood flows in my veins
Your beautiful black blood that irrigates the fields

Paying for Health

The topic 'paying for health' could be debated over and over, but the adverse effect of 'direct payments' popularly known as 'out of pocket' on the poor and poverty cannot be over-emphasized. Many developing countries see a large number of its population living in rural areas and in other cases hard to reach areas leaving a good number of population underserved with limited or no access to amenities including health.

Preventing Seasonal Malaria in Children

In the fight to reduce mortality rates due to malaria, innovative approaches have been piloted and championed by donors and organisations, one of which is the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention targeted at children.

''In many countries in the Sahel sub-region of Africa, malaria transmission is notably
seasonal, with most of the disease burden occurring during a distinct rainy season.  In
recent years, seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) has emerged as an
approach to  prevent malaria among children aged 3-59 months in areas where
malaria transmission is highly seasonal.  SMC involves the administration of monthly
treatment courses of a combination of antimalarial drugs with the objective of
maintaining therapeutic antimalarial drug concentrations in the blood throughout the
period of greatest risk.''

''Poverty and income inequality'' From WHO

In sub-Saharan Africa, both the incidence and depth of poverty are high compared to other areas of the world. Sub-Saharan Africa also lags behind other regions in respect of non-income measures of poverty. In addition to low levels of income, the poor have few assets and only limited access to government services. Poverty incorporates varying degrees of vulnerability, isolation, dependence and powerlessness, all of which negatively affect health status.

Community participation in health care. Community eye care research in South West Cameroon.

While conducting a research in community eye care in South West Cameroon, in June, 2012, it was interesting to find increasing willingness of community members to engage in health.
Although there is a huge debate on effectiveness of decentralisation in Primary Health Care especially on the issue of capacity for management at the grass root (rural or village levels), discussions with community members revealed willingness to take responsibility of their health with increased awareness.
For instance people who used eye care facilities were people who had knowledge of the care for the eyes. Indeed, they were mostly of higher economic status than most in the remote areas.
